Match Report - 10 Jan 2018, Baldock Crusaders Netball Club Baldock Crusaders Mystics lost to Sirens

10th January 2018 Sirens VS Baldock Blacks
Final Score Sirens 3-1 Baldock Blacks

After a three week break, Baldock were excited for their first match of 2018. The team consisted mostly of attacking players. This meant some players were playing out of position as defenders. However, the team discussed tactics and encouraged strong play.

The game started with both teams rushing and making easy mistakes, probably due to no game play and training over the Christmas period. However, as the first quarter progressed, the play improved and Baldock took the lead and won the quarter by 1. The win helped Baldock to stay positive and encourage a number of goals in quick succession in the second quarter. However, Sirens fought and managed to gain possession of the ball, resulting in a sudden increase in goals and a lead by 2 as the second quarter finished.

Baldock’s defence worked extremely hard to stop the Sirens shooters from gaining control of the ball. However, the shooters had an unusually quick but accurate shooting technique. This meant even the strongest of defenders wouldn’t be able to stop the shooters from gaining possession and scoring. This applied pressure to Baldock’s attackers as the scores were close and each shot was a major significance to the outcome of the third quarter. Although Baldock fought hard, the Sirens took the lead by 2 goals, meaning Baldock had only the final quarter to win to draw.
With Sirens leading 2-1 into the final quarter, Baldock were ready to fight for a win. However, a fall in the third quarter resulted in injury, meaning Baldock lost a strong attacking player. After a reshuffle of positions, Baldock unfortunately didn’t have the time to adjust to the new set up. This resulted in Sirens having the opportunity to score a number of goals. However, the Christmas break didn’t help Baldock as the team ran out of energy, seeing the Sirens lead by 8 as the final quarter concluded.

Baldock’s first game in 2018 highlighted the improvement of each player from the start to the end of the game. The sloppy rushed passes in the first quarter were soon forgotten as the play improved and the team attacked the game. Fitness was unfortunately the downfall in the end (too much Christmas Turkey and too many Mince Pies) as Baldock couldn’t match the Sirens in the final quarter. However, 2018 looks to be bright for Baldock Blacks!

A special thank you to the team members who played out of position!
