Due to injury and holidays, Baldock Black had another week of difficulty as there were no defensive players available for the game. Three attacking players stepped up and played defence so the team could try to win the game.
The game began with Baldock Blacks gaining control of the ball from a number of interceptions. The attacking players moved the ball down the court to the shooters. Unfortunately, the shooters struggled to score the number of goals they would usually be able to secure. This meant that although Baldock Black managed to maintain an encouraging attacking stance, Baldock Youth won the quarter by 4.
The team worked together to decide who the strongest players were for the shooting positions as the first quarter did not conclude as we had expected. A slight reshuffle to the attacking positions encouraged Baldock Blacks to have a stronger second quarter. However, the shooters were still struggling to secure the goals which was very unusual and meant Baldock Youth could gain possession of the rebounds. Defence stayed strong and managed to intercept the ball and catch the rebounds from the missed shots from Baldock Youth. Attack worked hard to move the ball down to the shooters, resulting in a draw in the second quarter.
After a considerable shuffle of all of the positions, Baldock Blacks returned to the third quarter much stronger. The shooters managed to work the ball harder and score a higher number of goals, resulting in a win by 2 goals for Baldock Blacks.
Due to the success of the third quarter, the positions stayed the same and the team gave each other encouraging tips for improvement to try to finish with a win for the final quarter and the game. The final quarter was very tense. The inexperience of the defensive players began to become obvious as Baldock Youth’s attack improved their tactics considerably, resulting in a quick succession of goals! Baldock Blacks maintained positivity and continued to cheer for each other as the ball continued to make its way down the court to the shooters. Although Baldock Blacks stayed strong, the nail biting quarter concluded with Baldock Youth winning the final quarter by a lead of 3 goals.
Overall, the game was very enjoyable and proved that some of the players have the potential to play both attacking and defensive positions!
